A Chance to Do Something Great
The St. Lawrence University Public Interest Corps, launched by President William L. Fox ’75, established an AmeriCorps-inspired program for St. Lawrence students and recent graduates. This affords students the opportunity to complete summer internships sponsored by local North Country nonprofit agencies.
In order to help fund the SLU PIC initiative, the Emerson Challenge was posed to raise $250,000 in a matching effort by December of 2018. Matching that total would allow program coordinators to potentially double the number of participating organizations, add year-long, post-baccalaureate positions, and extend the scope of the program outside of the current radius.
The fundraising effort got off to a tremendous start thanks to a generous gift from Laurentian parents Chris and Gillian Millerchip P’21. The Millerchips helped bring the total raised to over $160,000, putting the University well on its way to success. With other Laurentians following in their footsteps, St. Lawrence met the Emerson Challenge months early, with a SLU PIC endowment now funded at over $600,000 to support and enrich the lives of students and others across the North Country region.
